File paperwork to create my business

You can file the paper form by mail, fax, or in person. If you fax your articles, include a fax coversheet with your credit card info.

You can use the Utah OneStop Online Business Registration to form your business with the Department of Commerce and register it with the Tax Commission, Labor Commission, Department of Workforce Services, and Department of Environmental Quality. Onestop also gives you the information you need to get local business licenses.

Register with the State Tax Commission

You can register for sales and use tax as well as income tax withholding by using Business OneStop or by submitting the paper Business and Tax Registration form to the Tax Commission.

Sales Tax:

Utah has a 4.7% sales tax plus any local taxes.

Income Tax:

Utah’s individual income tax rate is 5%.
Corporate franchise tax rate is 5% with a $100 minimum payment.

Get a business license

There is no general state business license but most city/county governments require businesses to have a local license. Check with your local government to see if you need any additional licenses or permits.

You will need to get a city business license. You can apply online but you should talk to the city first to make sure you have all the correct information. You can also download an application form online and apply in person or by mail.
